Episode 61 – Jason runs St. Louis!

    “I guess it’s because my electrolyte to salt ration was off:” You would help your listeners by admitting that you had to walk half of the marathon cause you didn’t train hard or seriously enough, as opposed to blaming it on sports drinks. It’s a disservice to listeners to blame salt ration for having to walk half the marathon–the body isn’t that sensitive, but your listeners might not know that. Your listeners might over think the supplementation as opposed to the training because of this.

      Interesting, I don’t know how to take this comment, Joe. Honestly, my training went well. I performed well during my peak week including my 20 miler without any problems. Could I have trained harder, sure. We all can. I don’t know for sure what happened to me during the race, so I probably shouldn’t have definitively said it was nutrition-based issues. But, we are beginners. As such, we bring others in, usually, who know more about this sport than we do. I was just recapping my thoughts about the marathon. Since I had problems in the 14-15 mile range (which didn’t happen during training runs), I didn’t associate it with training problems. I had never experienced the problems I had during the race before, so I’m unsure where the issue was. Looking back at my training, I did the vast majority of the runs scheduled plus cross-training.
      So, if the pace I started the race at was the same as my usual runs, where was the problem, Joe? After reading your comment, I was immediately pissed because I thought you were just kicking me while I was already down. But I don’t think (hope) that is the reason you commented. What should I have done differently in training? If you are a regular listener to the show, you’ll know that I’m pretty transparent on my training endeavors. When I have a crap week of training, I admit to it. If I have a great week in training, I bask in it. I logged a lot of time on my feet. Also, what else explains the cramping in my arms during the race? I don’t want to poopoo your comment, but understand it better. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  2. I would tend to agree with Jason that having cramps at mile 13-14 may be more reflective of a salt/electrolyte imbalance than a lack of training. Knowing that he has done many long runs in excess of that distance, it seems to reason that he should be able to run to at least mile 17 or 18 based on fitness alone. I think crashing at a distance way short of that is somewhat odd and may simply be due to lack of nutrition or electrolyte derangement (Maybe the differing consistencies of the Cytomax throughout the course or your body unfamiliarity with it played a bigger role than you think?)

    As a veteran marathoner, I can tell you Jason that stuff like this can happen to anyone. The fact you struggled through 13 miles is a tribute to your persistence and should be admired. I for one can never imagine having to walk that far to finish a marathon. Kudos to you and I look forward to sharing in more of your adventures in the future🙂

    Lam is right- it can happen to anyone.😦 I just listened to the podcast and can feel your pain. The marathon has so many unknowns and if something doesn’t go just right then it’s so hard to get back on track.

    Anyway, congratulations again on the finish. You have that behind you.🙂 I hear you about wanting to switch back to half-marathons. No harm in that. It took me two years before I was ready to train for my second marathon.

    Hi Jason, congratulations on your first marathon – awesome effort! I have been listening to the podcast this morning and you could have been talking about my first marathon that back in July this year (I blogged my marathon at: http://runshufflerun.blogspot.com/2011/07/im-marathoner.html). I also experienced some problems that resulted in some walking, but I was determined to finish after putting in many months of training which meant I had to neglect the family.

    I was paticularly interested in your comments on the electrolyte drink provided. This has been one of the major things I have learnt. The drink provided in my marathon was not the same brand as I use and I found it very difficult to drink, and I think it made me sick. Next time I will be taking some money with me and buy my preferred sports drink along the way (or make sure family and friends are at key points on the course).

    It has taken me many months to recover but I determined to have another go at the distance, with the goal of breaking 5 hours. I know its strange to say this, but it was a lot of fun and I have met some great people along the way. I’m sure you will have another go at the distance – the feeling is highly addictive.
