Episode 33 – The Half Marathon Special

Ni Hao! This week (download here), the Geeks are happy to have 1/3 of the 3 Non Joggers in the virtual studio, Mr. Russ McGarry.  Russ is a ultramarathoner residing in Portland, Oregon.  He’s one funny mofo.

Training updates:  Ray is still training for April’s Shamrock Shuffle, but is currently experiencing some thigh pain (possibly caused by Enya….).  Jason is still focused on lifting heavy things, but did manage to get a few miles in this week.  Russ is having a low mileage week since he’s not currently training for anything (around 35 miles).

Russ tells us his origin story, starting as a standup comedian out of Chicago, traveling to Los Angeles where he was a writer.  It was in LA when the running bug got to him.  He was enticed to run the LA Marathon with a friend.  From there, Russ developed more of a taste for the trail running.  He claims that his predisposition to injury and falls makes him more suited for the trails.  Soon after, Russ and his wife moved up to Portland where he continued his love of trails, signing up for 50k’s, 50 milers, then 100 milers.  Here, he met Carl and Gary (the other 2 non joggers).  Gary and Russ talked much about running while training for the Pine to Palm 100 and decided that they should make a podcast.  Carl was  included given his history as a radio dj before his mailman-ing career took off.  Thus spoke the 3 Non Joggers.

Russ made mention of a great site for West Coast trail runners to check out: PCTrailRuns.com.  If you would like to support Carl’s documentary, go to his website, CarlTheMailmain.com.

Twitter Search & Follow: This week, we are just going to ask you to follow Jason’s wife, Tera (@MrsKehl80).  She just signed up for her first 5k, the GO St. Louis 5k.

Also, follow all of the 3 Non Joggers:  Russ (@3NonJoggers), Gary (@GaryTheVale), and Carl (@CarlTheMailman).

Until March 26, Jason is still raising money for pediatric cancer research via St. Baldrick’s.  Your donation of $5, $10, or whatever you can spare helps tremendously.  Thank you to those who have donated!  To Donate: click here.

Until next time, leave feedback on iTunes,  email questions and comments to feedback [at] GeeksInRunningShoes [dot] com or just ‘like us’ on facebook! Also follow us on Twitter, Jason (@guttocutwl) and Ray (@adeyemiking).
