Episode 68 – Oblinkin!

Welcome to Episode 68!  This week, download here, Geeks talk with Pete Larson (@Oblinkin), our resident shoe/form expert from Runblogger.com.  Pete is a well accomplished runner (and a modest one at that) who also happens to be a scientist! This week’s discussion revolved around the ‘holy war’ between barefoot/minimalist and ‘heeled’ shoe runners. Pete does a good job of explaining the minimalism “spectrum” as well as mention the similarities, and differences in running over the years – interestingly enough, that is part of the content of the book he is co-authoring scheduled to be released this summer. Oh, and check out some pictures of Pete’s lab from a Runner’s World photo shoot.

We are also playing with the idea of creating weekly fitness challenges for our listeners. These hopefully will be simply yet challenging fitness goals for all us to try to achieve as we all work towards our collective goal of fitness in 2012. Let us know what you think about this idea.

Episode 67 – Happy 2012!

It’s a new year!! Happy 2012 everybody. This episode, (download here) the Geeks talk about their new year’s resolutions,  goals, or whatever you would like to call it. It’s a leap year so we’ll all have 1 extra day to make sure we hit these goals, right?

Anyway, both Jason and Ray set the standard improved fitness goal. That is, both are going to make an effort to improve their overall fitness rather than just increased running distances at a faster pace. This means, there will be a lot more weight lifting, cycling, swimming, and other forms of fitness activities as the year goes by. Therefore, this year the show is going to focus on more than just running. Guests with backgrounds from other fitness activities will hopefully come on the show and share their stories.

We hope that you will join us as we go through 2012 and accomplish our goals together. At least until the Mayan calendar runs out ;)

Episode 65 – Jeremy and Golden from Altra Running

This episode, (download here) the Geeks are happy to chat with Jeremy and Golden, the co-founders of the Altra Running Company (@AltraZeroDrop) based out of Utah. The guys come on the show to talk about the genesis of their popular running show company as well as give us a back story about their running, which they are awesome at by the way. For instance, Golden’s marathon time of 2:45 at the age of 12 is still a world’s best for that age.

These guys have been working in the running speciality store arena for most of their lives and were really pioneers of the zero drop running shoe movement even before the popularity of Christopher McDougall’s Born to Run. On this episode, they share their stories, talk about their motivation for running in zero drop shoes, and most importantly educate us on the typical path of transition to a zero drop shoe.

Also, they were really generous to offer an exclusive discount for GiRS listeners this week (December 4th, 2011 through December 11th, 2011) on their website - www.altrazerodrop.com. Use the discount code “ALTRAGIRS12” when you checkout and you will automatically receive 15% off of your order. We thank the guys over at Altra for hooking us up with this offer. When you get a chance, please reach out to them on Twitter (@AltraZeroDrop) and spread the love.
